2017 Bike to Work Week Activities

Bike To Work Santa Cruz For 30 years, Ecology Action has been organizing the Bike To Work program in Santa Cruz County. The program happens every May and October and now represents the largest sustainable transportation event in the region and serves a combined total of over 13,000 residents every year.

2017 BIKE WEEK SCHEDULE

There is something for everyone as part of the Bike Week line-up from May 5-12, hosted by Ecology Action:

Friday, May 5th

Bike Week First Friday at the Museum of Art & History (5-9pm)

This family-friendly kick-off celebration will be hosted by Ecology Action and Bike Santa Cruz County to celebrate our community’s love for biking. Environmentally-focused activities include:

  • Bicycle wheel looms, bike part spirographs, wheely good rides, and even more crafts
  • Bike trial stunt shows by Matt Meyer
  • A Captain Planet and the Planeteers Community bike ride (7pm)
  • Music by Dan P and the Bricks

Saturday, May 6th

Bicycle Trip’s 24th Annual Bike Fest (12-4pm)

Keep the fun rolling at Bicycle Trip Bike Fest! All ages and levels of cycling will come together to celebrate the joy of life on two wheels!

  • What: A huge, bike-themed party celebrating Bike Week
  • Where: Bicycle Trip, 1001 Soquel Avenue, Santa Cruz
  • Highlights: BBQ, Bike Stunt Shows, eBike Demos, Vendor Fair, Family Fun, and Free Raffle!

Sunday, May 7th

Girls Rock Mountain Bike Ride (9am)

Hosted by Girls Rock and Bicycle Trip, this fun ladies mountain bike ride is a great opportunity to make new friends and get out on some of the best trails in Santa Cruz. The ride is open to all skill levels and ride leaders ride at your pace and comfort level. Meet at Bicycle Trip on Soquel Avenue. For more ride details, visit the Girls Rock website.

Westside Trail Mixer: Connect the Arts to the Rail Trail. Learn, Share, Create, Inspire (1-3pm)

Meet at the rail corridor off Swift Street between Kelly’s Bakery and Humble Sea Brewery for a community art party to welcome the trail. $1.00 off Humble Sea pints, free snacks, music, interactive art (pavement poetry), and lots of family friendly activities. In partnership with The City of Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz City Arts. Special thanks to the SCC Regional Transportation Commission who owns the public corridor.

Monday, May 8th

Activate the River Ride with Patagonia and the Coastal Watershed Council (5:30pm)

Meet at the Patagonia store on River Street for some delicious Patagonia Provisions and store coupons. After a quick gathering, take a short community bike ride, co-lead by Greg Pepping from the Coastal Watershed Council and City of Santa Cruz staff. The ride will end at the beautiful Solaire Restaurant + Bar, where cyclists can participate in a cyclists-only Happy Hour special. The first 20 participants to start the ride at Patagonia will receive a free beer coupon for Solaire.

Sip and Savor at Solaire, Hotel Paradox (4pm-close)

Pedal on over to the Hotel Paradox and Solaire Restaurant + Bar to participate in a mini-getaway to the hidden destination at the center of it all. Show your bicycle helmet to receive 15% off all food and beverage (including beer, wine, and spirits). Enjoy the sunset before you cycle back to reality.

Tuesday, May 9th

Cycle & Dine

Be ready to show your helmet to your server upon arrival and ask for the ‘Cycle & Dine’ discount!

  • 10% off at Charlie Hong Kong
  • $1 off all beers at Discretion Brewing
  • 15% off snacks, morsels, and the Ploughman’s Lunch at The Kitchen
  • 15% off at Severino’s Bar and Grill

Wednesday, May 10th

Beer Thirty Bottle Shop & Pour House ~ New Belgium Brewing and Bikes Night! (5-10pm)

Ride over to the outdoor patio at Beer Thirty for an entertaining evening of movies, beer, and chili! New Belgium will be pouring 10 beers alongside their independent short movie series, Clips of Faith. Seating is limited, so purchase tickets in advance for a seat and dinner, including Fat Tire Chili, Dayblazer Cornbread and a Cocoa Mole Brownie. Tickets for the movie and chili dinner (plus entry into a special raffle for a New Belgium USA made cruiser) can be found at the Beer Thirty website.

Thursday, May 11th

Bike to Work/School Day (6:30-9:30am)

Visit Ecology Action’s Breakfast Site page for a complete list of 12 public breakfast sites across Santa Cruz County and 45+ participating school sites. Cyclists will receive a free breakfast, free bike maintenance (at most sites), raffle prizes, and more!

Friday, May 12th

Bike Party Group Ride at Ecology Action parking lot (on Church Street across from the library)(6-9pm)

Jump on your bikes for the It’s Easy Being Green Bike Party Ride for all ages, experience levels, and types to meet, ride, and play together in the streets. Riders are encouraged to wear green costumes or decorate their bikes to fit the theme. Before the ride, join Bookshop Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz Indivisible for a postcard writing campaign for climate change. Bike Party will represent the final celebration of Bike Week.
