Highway 9 Long-Term Lane Closure Continues 12/6

Long-Term Lane Closure Continues on Highway 9 for Retaining Wall and Drainage Replacement

Caltrans is continuing long-term traffic control on Highway 9 between Lorenzo Ave and Prospect Ave, located approximately 0.9 miles south of the Route 236 junction. This is part of an ongoing project to replace a retaining wall and culvert, as well as to improve the roadway and drainage systems.

Crews are scheduled to pave the northbound lane on Saturday, December 6, 2025. Following this work, the northbound lane will reopen to traffic on Monday, December 8, 2025. Once northbound is restored, the traffic control system will shift to the southbound side, where remaining roadway, retaining wall, and drainage operations will continue through the end of the month.

Three-Week Construction Schedule:

  • Dec 8–9, 2025: Traffic switch fully to the southbound side; K-rail adjustment on the northbound shoulder.
  • Dec 10–11, 2025: Soldier pile installation and PCDC temporary pile placement on the southbound side.
  • Dec 12, 2025: Begin drainage pipe access and install 42″ pipe.
  • Dec 13, 2025: Install junction structure.

Traffic Impacts:

There will be one-way traffic control (signalized) through the work zone. Motorists should expect delays of approximately 5 minutes. The work zone will remain active until December 31, 2025, when both lanes are expected to reopen. There are no anticipated effects on pedestrians or bicyclists.

Project Overview:

This project involves replacing a retaining wall and a culvert, upgrading drainage systems, and performing saw cutting and roadway repairs. Granite Construction of Watsonville oversees the project. Construction began in August 2025 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

Caltrans advises travelers to slow down, allow extra travel time, and obey all traffic control devices when traveling through the work zone.
