Caltrans Public Meeting for Route 1 Capitola Preventative Maintenance Project 12/7

Published December 1, 2023

Caltrans Announces Hybrid Public Information Meeting for Proposed Santa Cruz Route 1 Capital Preventative Maintenance Project

Caltrans District 5 will hold a Hybrid Public Information Meeting regarding a proposed project located on Route 1 through the City of Santa Cruz from just south of the Junction at State Route 9 Junction to just north of the Western Drive intersection. The project will include the rehabilitation of just over eight lane miles of pavement, upgraded sign panels, replacing over five hundred feet of Class II bike lane, adding ladder markers to enhance the visibility of identified crosswalks, upgrades to curb ramps, and replacing damaged intersection detectors.

The public is invited to this meeting which will be held in an open house format either in person, or virtually, on Thursday, December 7 at 5:30 pm. The public will be able to learn more about this project, view informational displays and ask questions of the project team, including staff from engineering, traffic operations and environmental.

  • In person: Santa Cruz Police Department at 155 Center Street in Santa Cruz.
  • To access the meeting virtually, please use the following link: https://cadot.webex.com/cadot/j.php?MTID=me8e02133bb6f6422cd9bc6149307f29d (password: missionstreet). To join by phone, dial +1-408-418-9388 (access code: 24814586597)

The purpose of this project is to improve the roadway, curb ramps and extensions, guardrail, bike lanes, sign panels, crosswalks, and loop detectors to prevent continued deterioration of this infrastructure, which could lead to service disruption on State Route 1 and more frequent maintenance repairs. The project will also improve safety by adding curb extensions, ADA standard curb ramps, and improving crosswalk visibility.

The Environmental Document is available for review at the Caltrans District Office at 50 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo and at the Santa Cruz Downtown Public Library at 224 Church Street. This document can also be viewed and downloaded at the Caltrans District 5 website.

For traffic updates on other state highways on the Central Coast motorists can call Caltrans District 5 Public Affairs at (805) 549-3318 or visit the District 5 website.

All highway workers deserve to get home safely too.  Drive slowly and carefully in all work zones.
