Highway 1 Operational Improvements in Santa Cruz County Continues with Upcoming Closures of The Fishook and Highway 17
A project to resurface Highway 1 from the North Aptos undercrossing to the junction with State Route 9 which began on Monday, June 3rd continues with overnight closures of the Fishhook starting Sunday night, October 20. Roadwork for this stage is as follows:
- The northbound connector ramps at the Fishhook will be completely closed overnight from 9 pm to 5 am on Sunday, October 20 through Thursday night, October 24 and from Sunday, October 27 through Thursday night, October 31.
- The southbound connector ramps at the Fishhook will be completely closed overnight from 10 pm to 6 am on Sunday, October 27 through Thursday night, October 31.
Detours will be provided via construction (orange) signs.

Construction occurs each week Sunday night through Thursday morning from 9 pm until 6 am. Caltrans will announce in advance when these ramps closures will occur or if roadwork at a given location is completed early or requires additional closures.
Electronic message boards will be activated to advise travelers about this roadwork.
The contractor for this $22 million project is Granite Construction of Watsonville, CA.
This project will include upgrades to Americans With Disabilities Ramps (ADA), bridge rail replacement at the Fish Hook and Ocean St. bridges, improvements to electrical systems, bridge deck treatments and the replacement of concrete barriers. It’s scheduled to complete by the end of 2020.
