Full Overnight Closures of North and Southbound Highway 1 Set to Begin Sunday, May 4 for Capitola Ave. Bridge Construction
A project to construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements on Hwy. 1 between the Bay Avenue/Porter Street and State Park Drive interchanges continues with a focus on construction of the wood and metal framework, or falsework, which will be built to support construction of the Capitola Ave. Bridge Overcrossing.
In April 2024, crews demolished the Capitola Ave. overcrossing in order to construct auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements which widened the highway at this location. Crews will use a series of overnight closures to create the wood and metal framework from which the new overcrossing will be built. The new Capitola Ave. overcrossing will span the increased width of the highway, provide greater vertical clearance, and the increased width of the bridge itself will accommodate bike lanes and improved sidewalks.
Note that during this upcoming series of full overnight closures, that the full closures will only occur in one direction at a time. One direction of Highway 1 will always remain open during the closure of the highway in the opposite direction.
Full Overnight Closures of Northbound Highway 1 at State Park Dr.
Sunday, May 4, Monday, May 5, and Tuesday, May 6 from 10 pm to 5 am
During the full overnight closure of northbound Highway 1, travelers will be directed off at the State Park Dr. interchange and take Soquel Dr. north before rejoining northbound Highway 1 at the Bay/Porter onramp.
Full Overnight Closures of Southbound Highway 1 at Bay/Porter
Wednesday, May 7, Thursday, May 8, and Sunday, May 11 from 11 pm to 6 am
During the full overnight closure of southbound Highway 1, travelers will be directed off at the Bay/Porter. interchange and take Soquel Dr. south before rejoining southbound Highway 1 at the Park Ave. onramp.
Note: In the event that the northbound falsework construction is completed earlier than scheduled, crews would start with overnight closures in the southbound direction a day early. Updates will be provided to inform the traveling public.
The contractor for this $78 million project is Granite Construction of Watsonville, CA and the project is expected to be completed by Fall of 2026.
