Highway 1 Lane and Ramp Closures Continue

Highway 1 Lane and Ramp Closures Scheduled for Ongoing Drainage Improvement Project

Caltrans is continuing construction activities on a drainage improvement project along Highway 1. This work extends from the Trafton Road Undercrossing in Monterey County to one mile north of Larkin Valley Road in Santa Cruz County. The project includes widening the road, installing new culverts, and upgrading the lighting systems to enhance safety and improve the reliability of the roadway.

Closures began on August 18, 2025, and are expected to continue into September, with both ramp and lane closures scheduled during the day and overnight. Travelers should expect delays and allow extra time for their commutes.

Traffic Schedule September 14 – September 20:

Monday, September 15:

  • Daytime (9:00 am–3:00 pm): On- and off-ramp closures at NB Hwy 1 Buena Vista.
  • Nighttime (7:00 pm–6:00 am ramps / 8:00 pm–6:00 am lanes): SB Hwy 1 off-ramp and lane closure at Vista Point Rest Area.

 

Tuesday, September 16:

  • Daytime (9:00 am–3:00 pm): On- and off-ramp closures at NB Hwy 1 Mar Monte and SB off-ramp closure at Airport Blvd.
  • Nighttime (7:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. ramps / 8:00 pm–6:00 am lanes): SB Hwy 1 off-ramp and lane closure at Vista Point Rest Area.

 

Wednesday, September 17:

  • Daytime (9:00 am–3:00 pm): On- and off-ramp closures at SB Hwy 1 Larkin Valley.
  • Nighttime (8:30 pm–6:00 am): Lane #1 closure for median work at SB Hwy 1.

Thursday, September 18:

  • Nighttime:
    • NB Hwy 1 Mar Monte on-ramp closure (7:00 pm–6:00 am).
    • Alternating NB lane closures (8:00 pm–6:00 am).
    • NB Hwy 1 lane closure for K-rail installation (8:30 pm–6:00 am).

Friday, September 19:

  • Daytime (9:00 am–3:00 pm): Work continues behind K-rail.

Anticipated Delays:

  • Northbound Hwy 1 travelers should expect delays during ramp and lane closures.
  • Bicycle and pedestrians’ access may be impacted in certain areas; detours and signage will be posted.

This $2.9 million project is being performed by Granite Construction of Watsonville and is expected to be completed by April 2026. Caltrans reminds travelers to slow down in work zones to ensure the safety of both workers and the community.
