Full Overnight Closure of Northbound Highway 1 At 41st Avenue Now Set for Wednesday Dec. 13 and Thursday Dec. 14
Construction continues on a project to construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements on Highway 1 between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive interchanges and to construct a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue.
For Wednesday Dec. 13 and Thursday Dec. 14, travelers will encounter a full overnight closure of northbound Hwy. 1 at 41st Ave. from 10 pm to 4:30 am. A detour is available.
Travelers on northbound Hwy. 1 will be directed off at 41st Ave. and head east to Soquel Dr. Travelers will continue north on Soquel Dr. before rejoining Hwy. 1 at the northbound Soquel Dr. onramp. Travelers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.
One lane of southbound Hwy 1 may also be closed from 9 pm to 6 am.
Poor weather may result in a rescheduling of these closures. Updates will be provided as the closure dates approach.
This full overnight closure of Hwy. 1 is necessary for crews to construct the working platform from which the new bicycle and pedestrian bridge overcrossing will be constructed. Over two nights, crews will construct the platform, or falsework, out of timber and steel beams which will be utilized to stage the next phase of bridge construction.
About the Highway 1 Corridor Project
This project will construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Avenue/Drive interchanges and construct a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue. The auxiliary lanes will connect the on-ramps with the next off-ramp, thereby extending the weaving and merging distance between the ramps, improving traffic operations, and reducing cut-through traffic diverting to local streets and neighborhoods.
The bicycle/pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue will provide an alternative route for bicyclists and pedestrians currently using the Soquel or 41st interchanges to cross over Highway 1. The overcrossing will be lighted, 12- to 14-feet wide, and will incorporate aesthetic treatments consistent with the visual character of the corridor and the adjacent community.
The contractor for this $29 million project is Granite Construction of Watsonville, CA. This project is expected to be completed in late 2025.
