Highway 1 Overnight Full Closure 11/9

Published November 5, 2025

Overnight Full Closure Scheduled on Highway 1 Southbound for Culvert Repair Work

Caltrans will perform an overnight full closure of southbound Highway 1 near Buena Vista Drive in Santa Cruz County to complete emergency drainage repair work. The closure will take place Sunday night, November 9, 2025, from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am, affecting southbound Highway 1 between the Buena Vista Drive off-ramp and Airport Boulevard, approximately 1 mile south of Buena Vista Road.

This closure is necessary to safely remove heavy equipment as part of an emergency project to replace a damaged culvert and stabilize the area where sinkholes have developed around the existing drainage system.

Traffic Control:

  • Full closure of Highway 1 southbound between Buena Vista Drive and Airport Boulevard.
  • The Buena Vista Drive southbound on-ramp will also be closed.
  • Southbound travelers will detour via the Buena Vista off-ramp, continue on Ranport Road, and re-enter Highway 1 at Airport Boulevard.
  • Portable Changeable Message Signs will be in place to notify motorists of the closure and detour. Expected delay up to10–15 minutes.

Project Overview:

This emergency culvert repair project involves replacing a damaged drainage structure, removing trees and vegetation, restoring the site, and preventing further erosion. The $5.2 million project is being performed by Granite Construction Company of Watsonville under the supervision of Resident Engineer Ian Nguyen. Work is scheduled for completion by February 2026.

Caltrans reminds motorists to allow extra travel time, follow posted detours, and reduce speeds in work zones for the safety of crews and travelers.

Road information and updates can also be found on Caltrans District 5 Social Media platforms: X/Twitter at: @CaltransD5, Facebook at: Caltrans Central Coast (District 5) and Instagram at: Caltrans_D5.

Our crews deserve to get home safely too. Drive slowly and carefully in work zones.
