Highway 1 Overnight Lane Closures Starting 10/7

Published October 4, 2024

Work on Center Median of Highway 1 Between 41st Ave. and Soquel Dr. to Result in Overnight Lane Closures

Construction continues on a project to construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements on Highway 1 between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive interchanges and to construct a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue.

Starting Monday October 7, crews will resume with the next phase of construction which involves the widening of the center median and construction of concrete barriers. Overnight closures next week of the #1 (left) lane in each direction of travel will provide crews room in which to work safely during this next phase of construction.

Overnight Single Lane Closures of North and Southbound Hwy. 1

For four consecutive nights beginning Monday Oct. 7, travelers will encounter the closure of the #1 (left) lane in both the north and southbound directions of Highway 1, between 41st Ave. and Soquel Dr. Northbound overnight lane closures will be in effect from 9 pm to 5 am, with southbound closures in effect 9 pm to 6 am. Travelers will be channeled to the #2 (right) lane and can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

During these overnight lane closures, crews will be placing base rock in the center median.

Daytime Ramp Closures at Soquel Ave. and at 41st Ave.

For Monday Oct. 7 thru Thursday Oct. 10, travelers will encounter a closure of the Soquel Ave. onramp to southbound Hwy. 1, and closure of the Hwy 1 northbound onramp from westbound and eastbound 41st Ave. Only one northbound ramp will be closed at any one time.

These ramp closures will be in effect from 9 am to 3 pm during which time crews will be conducting landscape activities.

About the Highway 1 Corridor Project

This project will construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Avenue/Drive interchanges and construct a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue. The auxiliary lanes will connect the on-ramps with the next off-ramp, thereby extending the weaving and merging distance between the ramps, improving traffic operations, and reducing cut-through traffic diverting to local streets and neighborhoods.

The bicycle/pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue will provide an alternative route for bicyclists and pedestrians currently using the Soquel or 41st interchanges to cross over Highway 1. The overcrossing will be lighted, 12- to 14-feet wide, and will incorporate aesthetic treatments consistent with the visual character of the corridor and the adjacent community.

The contractor for this $29 million project is Granite Construction of Watsonville, CA. This project is expected to be completed in late 2025.

Our crews deserve to get home safely too.  Drive slowly and carefully in work zones.
