Highway 1 Overnight Lanes Closures and Daytime Ramp Closures Start 10/20

Published October 18, 2024

Overnight Lane Closures and Daytime Ramp Closures on Highway 1 Set to Begin Sunday October 20

Construction continues on a project to add north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements on Highway 1 between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive interchanges and to aid in construction of a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue.

The current phase of construction includes the widening of the center median and construction of concrete barriers. Overnight alternating lane closures of the No.1 (left) lane of Hwy. 1 will occur next week in each direction of travel to provide crews room in which to work safely during this next phase of construction.

Overnight Single Lane Closures of Northbound Hwy. 1 and Intermittent Closures of Single Lane of Southbound Hwy. 1

For five consecutive nights beginning Sunday Oct. 20 through Friday morning, Oct. 25, travelers will encounter the closure of the #1 (left) lane of northbound Highway 1, between 41st Ave. and Soquel Dr. Northbound overnight lane closures will be in effect from 9 pm to 5 am. Travelers will also encounter intermittent closures of the #1 (left) lane of southbound Hwy. 1 between 9 pm to 6 am. Travelers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

These overnight lane closures will permit crews to work safely in the center median as they place base rock in anticipation of paving operations.

Daytime Ramp Closure at 41st Ave.

From Monday Oct. 21 thru Thursday Oct. 24, travelers will encounter a closure of

the northbound Hwy. 1 onramp at 41st Ave from 9 am to 3 pm. Only one northbound ramp will be closed at any one time.

Pedestrian Detour on Soquel Ave.

On Wednesday Oct. 23, crews will begin construction on the sidewalk on Soquel Ave. between 17th Ave. and Chanticleer Ave. The sidewalk will be modified to provide access to the new Chanticleer Ave. bicycle/pedestrian overcrossing. Detour signage will direct pedestrians on Soquel Ave. around the work area via Rodriguez St.

Sidewalk construction will result in intermittent daytime flagging closures for vehicles on Soquel Ave., Monday through Friday, between 7 am to 3 pm. Sidewalk construction on Soquel Ave. is scheduled to take place through early December.

About the Highway 1 Corridor Project

This project will construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Avenue/Drive interchanges and construct a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue. The auxiliary lanes will connect the on-ramps with the next off-ramp, thereby extending the weaving and merging distance between the ramps, improving traffic operations, and reducing cut-through traffic diverting to local streets and neighborhoods.

The bicycle/pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue will provide an alternative route for bicyclists and pedestrians currently using the Soquel or 41st interchanges to cross over Highway 1. The overcrossing will be lighted, 12- to 14-feet wide, and will incorporate aesthetic treatments consistent with the visual character of the corridor and the adjacent community.

The contractor for this $29 million project is Granite Construction of Watsonville, CA. This project is expected to be completed in late 2025.

Our crews deserve to get home safely too.  Drive slowly and carefully in work zones.
