The Highway 17 road conditions have caused major traffic concerns here in Scotts Valley. The commuters who normally drive northbound on Highway 17 are now using Scotts Valley Drive to bypass the traffic. This situation has caused gridlock in the north end of our city. SVPD has come up with a plan which we will implement tomorrow between 7am to 10am. We hope this will improve our residents’ ability to move about our city during those times:

1) Close down the off ramp from southbound Highway 17 to Scotts ValleyDrive:

We have clearance from Caltrans to close the off ramp. This would alleviate the congestion at this intersection we faced this morning. People who want to get to Scotts Valley could still exit at the Mount Hermon Road off ramp.

2) Patrol Officer for traffic control at Scotts Valley Drive/Glenwood:

This officer’s priority is getting parents and students to Vine Hill and SVHS.

3) Patrol Officer for traffic control at Scotts Valley Drive/Granite Creek:

This officer’s priority would be to move traffic onto the Granite Creek overpass while making sure the intersection is clear for cross traffic.

4) Close down the on ramp for northbound Highway 17 from Granite Creek:

The officer here would direct commuters who want to get back on the highway up Santa’s Village Road and make it a priority for parents to access Baymonte School for drop off. This would give us the ability to stack cars an additional ¼ mile and potentially clear up the Granite Creek intersection for local traffic.

5) Send all northbound Highway 17 commuters up Santa Village Road:

We would not station anyone at this location. We are expecting drivers to figure out they can access Highway 17 from this location.
