Soquel Ave Overnight Closure Starts 1/22

Published January 22, 2024

Overnight Closure of Soquel Avenue Near Highway 1 Next Week

Construction continues on a project to construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements on Highway 1 between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive interchanges and to construct a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue.

Full Overnight Closures of Soquel Ave

For Monday, Jan. 22, Tuesday, Jan. 23 and possibly Wednesday, Jan. 24 (if weather events cancel the Monday closure) travelers will encounter a full closure of Soquel Ave. in both directions between 17th Ave. and Chanticleer Ave. This full closure will be in effect between 10 pm and 5 am.

A detour is available. Travelers on Soquel Ave. will be directed to 17th Ave., Rodriguez Street and Chanticleer Avenue, before returning to Soquel Avenue. Message and directional signs will be in place to direct travelers.

This full overnight closure of Soquel Ave. is necessary for crews to construct the working platform from which the new bicycle and pedestrian bridge overcrossing will be constructed. Over two to three nights, crews will construct the platform, or falsework, out of timber and steel beams which will be utilized to stage the next phase of bridge construction.

Daytime Ramp Closures

For Wednesday Jan. 24 thru Friday Jan. 26, travelers may encounter a daytime closure on one of two onramps to southbound Hwy. 1. The loop onramp to southbound Hwy. 1 from 41st Ave. may be closed from 9 am to 3 pm. Message and directional signs will direct travelers to detour to the southbound onramp for Hwy. 1 at Soquel Dr. Travelers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Additionally, the onramp to southbound Hwy. 1 at Soquel Ave. may be closed from 9 am to 3 pm. Message and directional signs will direct travelers to detour to the southbound onramp for Hwy. 1 at 41st Ave. Travelers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Note: These daytime closures of onramps to southbound Hwy.1 at 41st Ave. and Soquel Ave. will alternate. At no time will these two ramps be closed at the same time. Up to date information on the timing of these closures will be available on Caltrans Quickmap.

These closures are necessary for construction activities to take place in and around the loop onramp and the Soquel Ave. onramp.

About the Highway 1 Corridor Project

This project will construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Avenue/Drive interchanges and construct a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue. The auxiliary lanes will connect the on-ramps with the next off-ramp, thereby extending the weaving and merging distance between the ramps, improving traffic operations, and reducing cut-through traffic diverting to local streets and neighborhoods.

The bicycle/pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue will provide an alternative route for bicyclists and pedestrians currently using the Soquel or 41st interchanges to cross over Highway 1. The overcrossing will be lighted, 12- to 14-feet wide, and will incorporate aesthetic treatments consistent with the visual character of the corridor and the adjacent community.

The contractor for this $29 million project is Granite Construction of Watsonville, CA. This project is expected to be completed in late 2025.

Road information and updates can also be found on Caltrans District 5 Social Media platforms: Twitter at: @CaltransD5, Facebook at: Caltrans Central Coast (District 5) and Instagram at: Caltrans_D5.

Our crews deserve to get home safely too.  Drive slowly and carefully in work zones.
