Overnight Closure Highway 1 Rescheduled to 1/17

Published January 12, 2024

Overnight Closure of Southbound Highway 1 Rescheduled to Wednesday January 17

Construction continues on a project to construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements on Highway 1 between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive interchanges and to construct a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue.

Full Overnight Closure of Hwy. 1

The overnight closure of southbound Hwy. 1, originally scheduled for Tuesday Jan. 16, has been postponed due to the forecast for rain and has been scheduled for Wednesday Jan. 17.

For Wednesday Jan. 17, travelers will encounter a full closure of southbound Hwy. 1 between Soquel Dr. and 41st Ave. This full closure will be in effect between 10 pm and 5:30 am. One southbound lane will be closed 1 hour prior to and one-half hour after the full closure.  One lane of northbound Hwy 1 will also be closed from 9 pm to 5 am.

A detour is available. Travelers on southbound Hwy. 1 will be directed off at Soquel Dr. and continue south on Soquel Ave. before rejoining Hwy. 1 at the southbound 41st Ave. onramp. Message and directional signs will be in place to direct travelers.  Travelers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

This is the second of two full overnight closures of Hwy. 1 which are necessary for crews to construct the working platform from which the new bicycle and pedestrian bridge overcrossing will be constructed. Over two nights, crews are constructing the platform, or falsework, out of timber and steel beams which will be utilized to stage the next phase of bridge construction.

Full Overnight Closures of Soquel Ave.

For Thursday Jan. 18, and possibly Sunday Jan. 21, travelers will encounter a full closure of Soquel Ave. in both directions between 17th Ave. and Chanticleer Ave. This full closure will be in effect between 10 pm and 5 am.

A detour is available. Travelers on Soquel Ave. will be directed to 17th Ave., Rodriguez St., and Chanticleer Ave, before returning to Soquel Ave. Message and directional signs will be in place to direct travelers.

This full overnight closure of Soquel Ave. is necessary for crews to construct the working platform from which the new bicycle and pedestrian bridge overcrossing will be constructed. Over two to three nights, crews will construct the platform, or falsework, out of timber and steel beams which will be utilized to stage the next phase of bridge construction.

Daytime Ramp Closures

Daytime closures of onramps to southbound Hwy.1 at 41st Ave. and Soquel Ave. have been postponed due to forecasted rain. Updates will be provided when rescheduled.

About the Highway 1 Corridor Project

This project will construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Avenue/Drive interchanges and construct a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue. The auxiliary lanes will connect the on-ramps with the next off-ramp, thereby extending the weaving and merging distance between the ramps, improving traffic operations, and reducing cut-through traffic diverting to local streets and neighborhoods.

The bicycle/pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue will provide an alternative route for bicyclists and pedestrians currently using the Soquel or 41st interchanges to cross over Highway 1. The overcrossing will be lighted, 12- to 14-feet wide, and will incorporate aesthetic treatments consistent with the visual character of the corridor and the adjacent community.

The contractor for this $29 million project is Granite Construction of Watsonville, CA. This project is expected to be completed in late 2025.

Our crews deserve to get home safely too.  Drive slowly and carefully in work zones.
